Worst experience ever on first call.
I have an older dog that has started to bite groomers and vets out of fear, since we took him away from his old home. He is panicked when I hand him over to strangers. Especially strangers without the patience to take their time with him. He was groomed every six weeks in California where we came from, and the groomer told us he just takes a little patience, and they had to take their time with him as he gets older. I took this to mean that they would give him some time to calm down periodically when he started to get irritated. They always managed to do a beautiful job in about 3 hours, sometimes less. Taos is a whole nuther ball game though, and there aren't many groomers to choose from. I was told by the owner of Critters that she allots 2 hrs per dog and can't afford to take on a dog that takes even a little longer. I offered to pay as much as necessary if it took longer, and she kept repeating she could take no longer than two hours no matter what. We talked for quite a long time, and it became apparent that she didn't want or need the business and only takes on easy dogs that don't mind the rushed style of grooming she specializes in. It takes at least two months to get an appointment with her, so she must have quite the assembly line going if she churns them out every two hours, no matter what the age or temperament. I have called several vets and all the groomers in town, and apparently nobody in Taos has the experience or professionalism to handle a difficult dog. In a town full of abused and abandoned strays and dogs chained outside in all kinds of weather, I guess this shouldn't surprise me.
Audrey is an excellent groomer, very professional and capable. Appointments need to be made well in advance of need.
Critters is the best! We have been bringing our dog to Audrey for years and he just loves her. He was afraid of having his nails trimmed due to some bad experiences with other groomers, but she makes him feel comfortable and he is happy to go to the groomer now. She also does a great job with training! She has worked with our dog on basic training skills and quickly taught him things we weren't able to get him to do ourselves. We call her the dog whisperer. We highly recommend!
