The menu was informative and had a good number of dishes, no pasta though, but a solid description of the meal.
We arrived for our 6:30 reservations and were promptly seated. The host was gracious and attentive.
The thing is, Byzantium could be the kind of place that could enjoy repeat customers for a long time; sadly, unless they address their pricing they could easily be nothing more than a one time curiosity for many diners.
What a great place! From the moment we walked in we knew we were going to love it. Everything about the place was sooo cool. And, probably the coolest part was Scott the owner/operator/cook/waiter....! Scott went to lengths to ensure our evening out was memorable, without over doing it. And, then the food came...wow!!! Very well plated...If there were pictures in the menu they would have looked exactly like our prepared meals. As I told Scott, probably on more than 1 occasion, it was by far the best meal I have had in a very long time! We will definitely be back again and again.
Excellent food and great service. Best dining experience in Taos
Good food prepared a bit differently than the standard modern menu. They used pepper well. Smallish plates, but solid salad and excellent homemade bread. Tiny wine list, but the wine choices were good. The ambiance was a well-done faux North African or smokey Spanish vibe. The tables were spaced widely, which was good. Romantic.
Same for the 1/3 of a cup of French Onion Soup.
Now for the drawbacks of the experience: while all the dishes were well prepared, seasoned and well presented they were GROSSLY over priced! I live for an elegant dining experience: I bring with me people who are looking to enjoy the meal and each other’s company, but nothing on the menu explains receiving five pieces of bread, a tablespoon of marmalade, two pats of butter and being charged $8.00;
We had dinner here on New Years Eve. It is a nice restaurant with very few tables. The ambiance is warm and inviting. Expect a slow dining experience, the owner basically runs the restaurant himself with the help of one person in the kitchen. We enjoyed the muscles and the halibut. The bread is also delicious and clearly homemade. We also had the french onion soup, but it was SO spicy that I wouldn't really call it "french onion" soup. All in all a good meal, but not exceptional.
